Interests: I like the idea of playing out Ignis as he settles into a new world. It would be interesting for him to adjust to that while he also gets a handle on how better to deal with his injury. There's a lot of really cool stuff going on with Rifters now that they are in Kirkwall and it would be interesting to play someone who has a stake in that. Ignis will have that stake, not only because he is a Rifter but because his cast mate Prompto is. He's going to want to protect Prompto.

Canon World

The world Ignis is from is called Eos. Lucis and Niflheim are two of the handful of countries of Eos. Tenebrae is a providence under Niflheim control. Ignis is from Lucis. Lucis and Niflheim have been at war for a very long time - a war that many believed was coming to an end by a political marriage between the Lucis crown prince, Noctis, and the Oracle of Tenebrae, Lady Lunafreya. However, the marriage proposal turned out to be a ploy to allow Niflheim's leaders into the capital of Lucis, Insomnia. During that coupe the king of Lucis, Regis Lucis Caelum, was killed. After his death and the downfall of Insomnia, many believed the war over in a swift victory for Niflheim.

On top of war between nations, Eos also suffers from the Starscourge, a terrible plague that causes the nights to last longer and creates daemons who attack all who venture into the darkness. The Oracle is the only one with the ability to heal the Starscourge but there is a prophecy which tells of the coming of a True King who will put an end to the Starscourge once and for all.

Eos is also connected to six Astrals, godlike beings which appear as powerful giants in the physical world. They were the ones who originally gifted the Oracle and Lucis royal bloodlines the ability to fight the Starscourge. The Astrals can be summoned to help mortals at times however they usually require a covenant and payment when they do. The payment usually comes in the form of sacrifice and they prefer to form bonds with those of the Lucis royal bloodline. That bloodline was handpicked to protect items of power which had been gifted to mortals by Bahamut, one of the six. Those items are the Crystal and the Ring of Lucii.

The Crystal is a magic source that was used for hundreds of years to protect Insomnia and empower those who protect and serve Lucis - granting them magical abilities. It has immense power as it holds the "soul" of Eos. The Ring of the Lucii can be used to connect the wearer more directly to the power of the Crystal and gives them access to the collected ability of the past kings of Lucis as it adsorbs their souls when they die. The Ring does this so it can continue building power until it is strong enough for the True King to use it to end the Starscourge. This means the ring gives the wearer access to incredible ability. It is possible for someone not of the royal family to wear this ring and they might be able to make a deal with the Astrals to use that power but doing so usually requires a great sacrifice on their end.

History

Ignis was introduced to the crown prince, Noctis Lucis Caelum, when they were both very young. At that time, he was given the role of being adviser and caretaker for the future king. Since then, Ignis has been at the prince's side and his entire life has revolved around taking care of the prince. Ignis's advanced education focused on becoming the best possible adviser to a future king. Almost everything Ignis knows he learned to provide for the prince in some way. He's a tactician because he can use that to support Noct in battle and in rule. He can drive well to ensure that Noct arrives places safely. He cooks because he can provide for Noct - even if the prince still refuses to eat his vegetables.

At age 15 Ignis began training to be a Crownsguard and officially joined their ranks when he was 18. He trained and joined along with Gladiolus, a friend he had grown up beside who was sworn to be Noctis's "Shield" (a fancy name for bodyguard).

When Noct was in high school he moved out of the palace, so Ignis took to cleaning his apartment, continuing to cook for him, attending meetings in his stead, and reminding him to do his school work. His dedication to Noct never wavered over the years, in fact it only grew stronger.

Once the political marriage was set up and an end to the war seemed near, Ignis went with Noct to see Lady Lunafreya. They were accompanied by Gladiolus and Noct's best friend, Prompto. When the whole thing turned out to be a lie and his father was murdered, Noct took on the quest to reclaim the throne of Lucis. This eventually changed to him taking up the title of the True King. During the battle to make his covenant with the sea goddess Leviathan, Lunafreya was killed and Noct was rendered unconscious. Desperate to protect his King, Ignis put on the Ring of Lucii. This enabled him to save Noct but cost him his eyes.

Despite his injury, Ignis convinced the others to let him stay with them, along with the promise that they should carry on without him if he ever lagged behind.

After this a bunch more terrible stuff happened, including Prompto getting kidnapped, but the group eventually ended up in the fortress where Niflheim kept the Crystal. Finally ready to become the True King, Noct disappeared inside it.

A month has passed since then and the days grow ever shorter. Those who wait for Noct to return believe that when he does he will bring back the day. Though Ignis is aware a sacrifice will be required to make that happen, he still waits for his King to return and in the meantime trains and hones his skills to be a worthy companion in the final battle.

Personality

Ignis is the calm and collected one of the group. While Gladio is blunt and passionate and Prompto is endlessly optimistic, Ignis comes off as pragmatic and cool under pressure. That said, he cares for those around him and manages to be nurturing in the same moment that he seems positively refined. After Noctis lost his mother when he was very young, Ignis stepped in to on the role that she would have had tending to Noctis's emotional and physical needs. He sees this role as a duty but it is one that he proudly carries.

A talented Crownsguard and brilliant tactician, Ignis can hold up his own in battle. He even continues this despite losing his sight. He uses elemental weaponry to his advantage and is skilled with daggers and lances. His weapons of choice are ones of precision which suits his personality as Ignis is a perfectionist. He likes keeping things in order and enjoys it when actions can be planned precisely. This probably explains why his cooking is so beloved because cooking ultimately is planning a recipe and following it. He can sometimes get flustered or frustrated if things don't go the way he planned but he usually maintains his cool even at that. He has a tactician's mind, is extremely intelligent and well-educated, and feels a lot of pleasure at a "plan coming together."

Ignis has a very dry sense of humor and is known for delivering both puns and savage take-downs in a very matter-of-fact way. His tone of voice usually remains very even even when he delivers the cheesiest of lines (For example, after Noct is turned into a toad in battle Ignis says 'Hoppy to see you' without missing a beat).

Recently, Ignis has had to adapt to the loss of his sight. He has managed to do this so far through both the help of his friends and the force of his own will. He doesn't want to be a burden and instead wishes to contribute to his King's cause. That means being able to fight daemons and protect the citizens of Lucis. He's not about to let anyone or anything step in the way of his duty to his King.

Ultimately, loyalty is really what defines Ignis. His life has been centered around loyalty and continues to be. Even with Noct gone, Ignis is loyal to their friends and the people of Lucis. Once he's in Thedas, it will up to Ignis to discover where his loyalties here will lie.

Strengths & Weaknesses

+ Tactician - Ignis is a tactician and adviser to the King of Lucis. He's able to assess situations and come up with possible ways for them to end in victory. He's going to have a learning curve as he adapts to the ends and outs of Thedas but he will be focused on understanding how this world works so that he can return to proper form.

+ Lack of Sight - After Ignis put on the Ring of the Lucii, his eyes were burned out of his head. One of his eyes is completely gone and a massive scar runs from his forehead to his cheek. His other eye has been clouded and permanently damaged. He will never heal from this and will remain sightless until his end of days. While he has learned to compensate in certain ways such as relying on his other senses and putting aside his pride to accept the help of those around him, this is a loss he will never fully recover from. Eventually, after ten years of battling daemons while Noct is in the Crystal, Ignis will master how to walk without the aid of a cane and fight just as well as he once did, but that takes a lot of training. It's something he'll be working on continuously once he finds himself in Thedas.

+ Elemental Daggers and Lances - Ignis is basically a rogue who uses daggers and lances in his fighting style. Since losing his sight, he has taken to throwing daggers instead of up fighting close up, but he still has the ability to fight with his weapon of choice. On Eos, Ignis has access to three different elemental weapons - ice, fire, and lightning daggers. This will translate to him having experience fighting with Runed weapons in Thedas and means he has a pretty good understanding of how to use elemental damage to his advantage.

+ "Tempest" Abilities - In his canon, Ignis can use different magic flask to create area of effect attacks - the most powerful of which is called Libra Elementia, which he gains after he loses his sight and which enables him to choose the elemental flask that the enemy will be most vulnerable to. He can then exploit that vulnerability in the heat of battle. This ability is extremely similar to the Flask Attacks of a Tempest specialized rogue. He'd have to re-learn how to make the mixes since he'd be moving from Lucis magic flasks to Thedas elixirs, but once he's introduced to the idea of the Tempest specialization it will seem very familiar to him.

+ Agility - Ignis is one of the most agile characters in Final Fantasy XV. While not nearly as maneuverable as Noct's warp ability, Ignis's style is all about zipping, spinning, and flipping around the battle field. His movement has become more limited since he lost his sight but through practice and the help of others he will eventually regain a lot of the agility in his fighting style. To get to this level in his canon, it takes Ignis years of battling daemons while Noct is away. He won't be at that level again for a long time and needs to practice in order to regain most of his fluid fighting style.

+ Lack of Brute Strength - Ignis isn't the brawny warrior type. For that you would need Gladiolus. This means while Ignis does possess a lot of ability in other areas, he's not the one who is going to lifting super heavy things or swinging a giant sword around.

+ Cooking and Care - A major component of Ignis's personality is that he takes care of those around him. He is a fantastic chef and he goes out of his way to tend to his friends. While most of this has been centered on Noctis throughout his life, he can't help but also look out for others he grows close to. This helps inspire them to be loyal to him, as they are grateful for his actions, and also gives Ignis the ability to control his surroundings. He doesn't just clean after Noct because he wants to take care of Noct, which he most certainly does, but also so that he can be in a clean environment. He strongly prefers this to disorder.

+ Emotional Distance - Ignis is always careful to appear calm and collected. He wants to be the one that others rely on, the one who provides a strong foundation for a King to stand on. He hates the idea of expressing his own weakness. Because of that, he tends to keep his own emotions pretty hidden. The best example of this is after he loses his sight. All of the other characters are very vocal about how they are dealing with the reality of his injury, but he keeps his own opinions on the subject to himself until the arguments and bickering of the other three finally reach their boiling point. It's then that Ignis finally loses his temper a bit and tells them all they "bloody well know" he isn't all right. Then he reaffirms his desire to stay with Noct until the very end and pushes Gladio into accepting the reality of Noct's situation. Due to the fact that Ignis usually keeps that sort of thing to himself, the moment changes the minds of those around him and forces everyone to re-focus on what is important. Ignis tends to protect his own thoughts and feelings, which means that the moments he does express them are extremely important. This also could be a weakness or a strength when it comes to interpersonal relationship. On the one hand, he might not be able to form truly close bonds with strangers, but on the other, he's able to protect his own emotions and sway others when needed by using them. The way this will play out in Fade Rift depends a lot on the type of relationships that develop for Ignis after he arrives.

Suggested Nerfs

In his canon, Ignis has the ability to banish and call weapons to him. They basically appear and disappear in a flash of light. This is something the elite of the Crownsguard can do and is one of the abilities given to them by the royal family's connection to the Crystal. This obviously won't be happening in Fade Rift. He also won't have access to all of his weapon types right away. Instead, he will appear with only his ice daggers. The daggers will not have the exact magic that they have in his canon but instead will have an ice damage Rune. This change also blocks Ignis from his "Overclocked" ability in which he super charges that magic and boosts up his attack. He might be able to charge the Rune with a good Arcanist but it won't be something he can do on the fly during battle.

Ignis will also have to re-learn how to make flasks. While a lot of the same basic concepts of elemental damage will transfer over - the way the damage works and the concepts behind it are almost the same between FF and DA just by virtue of being standard video game fare - all of the ingredients and recipes he knows to make the elemental flasks will have to be relearned to make them fit into Thedas. Basically, while on Eos he is basically fully leveled Tempest rogue, on Thedas he's going to be at the beginning of his specialization skill tree.

Arrival Inventory

- A Kingsglaive Uniform (Reference here and here)
- Rather than his glasses, he'll have a visor which he wears over his eyes to mask most of the noticeable damage.
- A walking stick
- A pair of ice daggers and a few magic flasks which will arrive on Thedas empty.
- A single can of Ebony coffee.

'Human'ization

Ignis is human. A beautiful, beautiful human.

Fit

Really this comes down to wanting to take advantage of the awesome Rifter plot we have going on. Ignis's abilities also translate really well into an established Dragon Age lore, meaning I won't feel oddly capped or unable to play the character to his fullest. Ignis also already has a really good cast rate in Prompto and therefore has motivation to protect and defend another. All of that plus playing him learning to more fully adjust to his lack of sight while also adapting to Thedas just seems too juicy to pass up.

Also, let's be real, Episode Ignis answered a lot of questions regarding this character that makes him super interesting to play in any game.
